Lootera is loosely based on O. Henry’s short story The Last Leaf . Set against the backdrop of the Zamindari abolition in West Bengal, the film follows Varun (Ranveer Singh), an archaeologist who arrives at the mansion of Zamindar Sanjay Leela Bhansali (played by Barun Chanda) to excavate a temple. He falls for the Zamindar’s poetic daughter, Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha).
But Varun isn't an archaeologist; he is a con man. The film pivots from a sweeping romance to a devastating second half involving betrayal, polio, winter in Dalhousie, and a desperate act of redemption.
