If you live next to a Japanese wife, and you are a foreigner yourself, understand that she may be protecting you without your knowledge. I interviewed a French expat in Yokohama whose neighbor, Mrs. Sato, once intercepted a complaint about his late-night guitar playing by telling the association president, “He is learning ‘Sakura Sakura.’ It’s cultural exchange.” (He was playing heavy metal.
